Metallica w całej swojej karierze wzbudziła chyba więcej kontrowersji niż jakikolwiek inny zespół. Poniżej prezentujemy kwestie, o których fani grupy najchętniej woleliby nie pamiętać.
W pierwszym okresie działalności James Hetfield był zainspirowani imidżem… zespołów glamrockowych.
Choć Metallica w wywiadach zawsze odcinała się od jakichkolwiek wpływów glam rocka, okazuje się, że przynajmniej James Hetfield wcale nie był w owym wstręcie do zespołów pokroju Motley Crue tak gorliwy jak jego koledzy. Jak ujawnia w swojej biografii grupy Joel McIver, w czasie występu Metalliki przed Saxon w klubie Whiskey w 1982 r. jej frontman (co ciekawe wtedy tylko śpiewający, nie grający na gitarze) miał na sobie spodnie w panterkę! Obciachu dodawał mu wtedy jeszcze pas z nabojami z czaszką z czerwonymi oczodołami, który, wykrzykujący złowieszczy tekst „Metal Militia”, James zaczerpnął zapewne z wizerunku zafascynowanych kicz-horrorem Venom.
James Hetfield jest fanem country.
Po bogu metalowych wokalistów i gitarzystów rytmicznych można by było spodziewać się odmiennych inspiracji niż country. Niestety, za co fani gotowi byli go w ’96 r. poćwiartować, postanowił dać ujście swoim fascynacjom kowbojami nagrywając przy okazji sesji „Load” dla wielu utwór-potworka. Mowa oczywiście o „Mama Said”. Do dziś nie wiadomo jakim celom służyło nagranie tego kawałka. Czy Metallica zamierzała nim przekonać do siebie mieszkańców południowych stanów? Co istotne, numer sam w sobie nie był wcale zły. Ot, wpadająca w ucho balladka country. Nagrał ją jednak nie ten zespół…
Lars Ulrich zaniedbał się jako perkusista.
Sam gadatliwy perkusista Metalliki wolałby zapewne zostać zapamiętany główne jako muzyk z okresu „…And Justice for All”. Na całej płycie pokazał w pełni na co go stać, gdy mu się chce. Szczególnie w sztandarowym „One” wybija rytm imitując karabin maszynowy. Czym jednak wgłąb dyskografii zespołu z Larsem jest gorzej. Na „Black Albumie” jest jeszcze w porządku, ale na „Load” mały Duńczyk zredukował swój zestaw perkusyjny, zaś na pamiętnym „St.Anger” nie tracił już nawet czasu na strojenie werbla. W czasie koncertów też ostatnimi czasy również nierzadko zdarzają mu się rytmiczne gafy.
Zespół nagrał „Load” i „Reload”.
No może nie mowa tu o wszystkich, ponieważ część fanów – zwłaszcza młodszych – akceptuje wizerunek swoich idoli z 2. połowy lat 90. Ci jednak, którzy słuchali „Kill’Em All” czy „Master of Puppets” na kolanach, doznali szoku widząc muzyków Metalliki z fryzurami, jakich nie powstydziliby się ugrzecznieni studenci. Do tego dochodziła muzyka. Obok wspominanej już ballady country umieszczono tutaj kawałki nie mające nic wspólnego z thrash metalem. Gdyby chociaż było tu dużo dobrych numerów z pogranicza innych gatunków rocka… Niestety przynajmniej połowa materiału nie powinna nigdy ujrzeć światła dziennego. Takie choćby „Poor Twisted Me” do dziś śni się jako koszmar wielu zawiedzionym wtedy fanom.
Na „St. Anger” nie ma żadnej solówki.
Do dziś chyba wszyscy fani Kirka Hammetta zachodzą w głowę, dlaczego nie zagrał on na „St. Anger” ani jednej partii solowej. Sami muzycy tłumaczyli się tym, że jego solówki najzwyczajniej nie pasowały do charakteru numerów. Ponadto, sama płyta miała być swoistym manifestem zespołu, z którego nikt nie miał się wybijać przed szereg. Dziwne skoro potem w czasie koncertów udało się jakoś wpleść krótkie solo we „Frantic”… Ten okres sami muzycy nie wspominają jednak zbyt miło skoro w czasie ostatniej trasy nie wykonywali żadnych kompozycji z tej płyty.
Grupa współpracowała z Moby’m
Richard Melville Hall vel. Moby to oczywiście światowej sławy kompozytor muzyki elektronicznej. Co jednak ma wspólnego z Metalliką? Otóż wydany w 1995 r. singiel „Until It Sleeps” zawierał remiks tego numeru wykonany właśnie przez Moby’ego. W sumie można byłoby wybaczyć Ulrichowi i spółce taką kolaborację, niestety kawałek jest dość słaby. Z wspomnianego przeboju Mety wykorzystano zresztą tutaj tylko partię wokalną Jamesa z refrenu. Reszta utworu to nijakie transowe dźwięki.
…i z raperem.
Gdy Metallica postanowiła nagrać wspólny utwór z Ja Rule’m, tego typu pomysł nie był niczym oryginalnym. W latach 80. w studiach nagraniowym spotykały się już duety Aerosmith i Run-D.M.C. czy Anthrax z Public Enemy. W kolejnej dekadzie na słynnej ścieżce dźwiękowej do filmu „Judgement Night” hip-hopowe bity i rapowane wokale spotkały się zaś ze zgiełkiem gitar Slayera, Sonic Youth, Biohazard, Pearl Jam czy Faith No More. Że o wysypie kapel nu metalowych z Limb Bizkit i Linkin Park nie wspomnę na wzgląd na dobrą pamięć czytelników… Czy więc był sens, by Czterej Jeźdźcy dorzucali swoje trzy grosze? Tym bardziej, że „We Did It” na pewno nie przejdzie do historii muzyki tak jak choćby „Disorder” Slayera i Ice-T.
Kirk Hammett współpracował z Orbital.
Zespoły thrashmetalowe nie miały raczej szczęścia do flirtów z muzyką elektroniczną. Wystarczy przypomnieć współpracę Slayera z Atari Teenage Riot i utwór , który trafił na soundtrack filmu „Spawn”. Kilka numerów przed tym nagraniem na tej samej płycie znalazł się kawałek „Satan” nagrany przez elektroniczną grupę Orbital i… Kirka Hammetta. Z jednej strony pokazuje to pewną otwartość gitarzysty z drugiej kawałek – podobnie jak wspominany już „We Did It” – jest najzwyczajniej słaby i niczym się nie wyróżniający.
