Ten, kto czytał mój pierwszy artykuł na Muzykomachii, zapewne wie, że w muzyce cenię przede wszystkim brak jakichkolwiek ograniczeń i trzymania się konwenansów. Staram się wyszukiwać tego typu rzeczy, co na prawdę łatwe nie jest. Moim zdaniem ograniczenie się artysty (a muzyka bezspornie jest sztuką) mija się z celem samej sztuki. Ale to tak na marginesie 
Jak to zwykle bywa, na prawdzie perełki trafia się przypadkiem, i tak też było tym razem. W poszukiwaniu nowych doznań muzycznych odwiedziłem kolegę black metalowca (byłem już na prawdę zdesperowany), nie spodziewając się mimo wszystko jakichś rewelacyjnych doznań. Kolega ów przez jakiś czas gorąco polecał mi pewien norweski zespół o wdzięcznej nazwie Ulver, dlatego też dość pesymistycznie nastawiony, pożyczyłem od niego dwa albumy późniejszych dokonań tej grupy.
Po przesłuchaniu już jednego utworu nie mogłem wprost uwierzyć, że Ulver zaczynali od typowego norweskiego black metalu. Szczerze mówiąc, nie bardzo znam się na tego typu muzyce, ale z tego co zauważyłem, charakterystyczna, przynajmniej dla jej fanów, jest pewna ortodoksyjność. Czytając w Teraz Rocku szesnaście stron poświęconych Behemothowi dziwiłem się , jak często ta grupa musiała odpierać, i tu cytuję: ‘ataki’, jakoby grali death metal. Mnie, z całym szacunkiem dla fanów black metalu, taka ortodoksyjność jest obca i niezrozumiała, dlatego między innymi grupa Ulver niesamowicie mnie zaciekawiła.
Pierwszy utwór, którego dźwięki dotarły do mnie z głośników, to “Dressed In Black” z płyty “Blood Inside”. Hipnotyczne brzmienie syntezatora rozpoczynające ten kawałek bardzo mnie zaintrygowało. Wszechmiar różnych klawiszowych elementów połączony z elektroniką i chórami tworzy paradoksalnie chaotyczny ład, który towarzyszy temu albumowi do ostatnich chwil. Zauważalna jest również pewna konceptualność, ale to raczej w warstwie muzycznej, ponieważ w tekst zbyt się nie wgłębiałem. Nie gra dla mnie aż tak ważnej roli w tego typu muzyce.
Wszystkie utwory na “Blood Inside” stanowią pewną całość, której spoiwem jest miękka poduszeczka wszechobecnej na albumie psychodelii. Ciężko mi pisać o muzyce, do której nie jestem w stanie znaleźć jakiegoś punktu odniesienia, ale jeżeli chodzi o tę płytę, to najważniejszy dla mnie przede wszystkim nastrój. Nastrój tworzącej się powoli harmonii z postrzępionych fragmentów zaskakująco pasujących do siebie elementów muzycznych. Album ten to również kontrast. Elektronika zestawiona z klasycznymi instrumentami stanowi tego przykład. Kontrastowy jest też efekt tych zabiegów zbijający słuchacza z głębi wyciszających melodii w chaos nowo powstającej całości. Niezwykła dynamika połączona jest tu z prawdziwie głęboką i niemal odurzającą muzyką.
Jak wcześniej pisałem, jeśli chodzi o “Blood Inside” to teksty osobiście mnie nie interesują . Po pierwsze wyłaniają się tylko od czasu do czasu z natłoku dźwiękowych bodźców zewsząd atakujących percepcję. A po drugie… barwa głosu wokalisty jest tak niesamowita, że osobiście trudno jest mi tu wokal traktować inaczej niż po prostu jak jeden z wielu instrumentów. Wyłaniające się z tła dęciaki wprowadzają patetyczną atmosferę podtrzymywaną przez bardzo wysokie partie wokalu. A wszystko oprawione w specyficzny beat, z nastrojem świątecznym niema wiele wspólnego
Moim zdecydowanym faworytem wśród numerów na “Blood Inside” jest utwór “Christmas”. Kończące “For The Love Of God” klimatyczne dzwoneczki przywołujące na myśl świąteczne wieczory spędzane z rodziną przed telewizorem zapowiadają coś w stylu “Last Christmas”. Pewne zniesmaczenie za chwilę rekompensuje niemal przytłaczające wejście frazy wokalu: A God is born and others die…z mocną linią rytmiczną i ciężkim do wyłapania instrumentum.
“Blood Inside” jest jednym z dwóch albumów Ulver, które do tej pory przesłuchałem. Dający się bardziej sklasyfikować “Perdition City” to już typowy Trip-Hop (przynajmniej w moim odczuciu) Do takiego zakwalifikowania tego albumu skłonił mnie rozpoczynający pierwszy utwór nieco zeskreczowany ciężki beat. Beat po jakimś czasie niespodziewanie się urywa i słyszymy wolne, rytmiczne i jednostajne uderzenia w klawisze.
W miarę rozbudowywania się tej sekcji wchodzi beat (nie tak już ciężki) z dodatkowym solo na saksofonie. Dla mnie najlepsza solówka z całej płyty. Nie przepadam specjalnie za jazzującą muzyką, lecz saksofon idealnie tam pasuje (podobnie miałem chyba tylko przy “The Final Cut” Pink Floydów) W tymi czasie oczywiście słyszymy jakiś tam wyłaniający się wokal stanowiący psychodeliczny dodatek do całości. Do końca “Lost in Moments” Triphopowo kołysze nas beat i znów… solo 
Wszystko kończy patetyczny chóralny akcent.
Przyznam szczerze, że w “Perdition City” dogłębnie się jeszcze nie wsłuchałem, lecz pod wpływem emocji towarzyszących mojemu nowemu odkryciu nie mogłem zwlekać z napisaniem tego artykułu. Album ten na pewno skrajnie różni się od “Blood Inside”, lecz jest równie dziwaczny. Kojarzy mi się momentami z Archive i nastrojowo z przywołanym wcześniej “The Final Cut” . Ogólnie to kawał dobrego Trip-Hopu w wykonaniu grupy pierwotnie grającej Black Metal. Samo w sobie zachęca do przesłuchania – prawda? Dlatego też sam będę się jeszcze wtapiał w muzykę Ulvera zapewne długi czas i wszystkim, którzy oczekują od muzyki niecodziennych i niekonwencjonalnych doznań artystycznych, zespół ten polecam.
